5.6. Factors Affecting the Sustainable Development Contributions of LULUCF Projects

Six factors that are critical to strengthening the sustainable development contributions of LULUCF GHG mitigation projects have been identified:

  • The consistency of project activities with international principles and criteria of sustainable development
  • The consistency of project activities with nationally defined sustainable development and/or national development goals, objectives, and policies
  • The availability of sufficient institutional and technical capacity to develop and implement project guidelines and safeguards
  • The extent and effectiveness of local community participation in project development and implementation
  • The transfer and local adaptation of technology (including hardware and software)
  • The application of sound environmental and social assessment methodologies to assess sustainable development implications.

Chapter 2 highlights the international principles and criteria of sustainable development that may facilitate more successful implementation of LULUCF projects. It also discusses the application of social and environmental assessment methodologies. This section discusses in more detail the other four factors.
