Climate Change 2007: Working Group III: Mitigation of Climate Change

5.5.5 Sustainable Development impacts of mitigation options and considerations on the link of adaptation with mitigation.

Within the transport sector there are five mitigation options with a clear link between sustainable development, adaptation and mitigation. These areas are biofuels, energy efficient, public transport, non-motorised transport and urban planning. Implementing these options would generally have positive social, environmental and economic side effects. The economic effects of using bio-energy and encouraging public transport systems, however, need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. For transport there are no obvious links between mitigation and adaptation policies and the impact on GHG emissions due to adaptation is expected to be negligible.

Mitigation and sustainable development is discussed from a much wider perspective, including the other sectors, in Chapter 12, Section 12.2.4.
